Baked Shakshuka Recipe

Shakshuka is a middle eastern delicacy that uses tomatoes and eggs as prime ingredient. It’s a form of egg curry which is light on the stomach. The recipe calls for fresh produce and hence it’s extremely important to have fresh and ripe tomatoes for the same. The overall taste largely depends on the quality of tomatoes. Hence, pick the best for this recipe. Also, this is a spicy recipe, but you can tone down the heat according to your suitability. This recipe is high on proteins and lycopene.

It is usually served with bread but you can have shakshuka with pita bread as well as flat bread. It’s a breakfast dish but it can be had any time of the day. All you need is simple home ingredients to make this fragrant curry.

Shakshuka Recipe

Preparation Time: 15 MINUTES

Serves 4


Tomatoes: 4 medium
Tomato paste: 4 tbsp
Eggs: 4
Olive oil: 1 tbsp
Ginger garlic paste: 2 tsp
Onions: 2 large
Bell pepper: 2 nos.
Red chilli powder: 1 tsp
Cumin powder: 1 tsp
Paprika: a pinch
Salt: to taste
Sugar: 1 tsp


Step 1

Clean and cut Onions, bell peppers and tomatoes in small dices. Set it aside

Step 2

Take an iron skillet and add olive oil to it. Add onions to it and let it get cooked till they are caramelized. Then add ginger garlic paste to the onions and cook it again.

Step 3

When the strong garlic smell is gone, add the tomatoes and bell pepper to it and cook it well. Stir the mixture continuously.

Step 4

Add the tomato paste and then add salt, sugar, red chilli powder, cumin powder and paprika to it. Stir it well.

Step 5

Now crack the eggs directly over the mix one by one. Cover the skillet with a lid and let the eggs get cooked in the heat. You can keep it runny or you can cook it till hard center stage. You need to keep checking if the bottom is not getting burnt.

Step 6

You can also bake the shakshuka in microwave oven. For that, transfer the tomato mix in a baking tray and then crack the eggs over the mix. Bake it at 160 degrees C for 10-15 minutes. Every oven is different. So care should be taken to see at what time the eggs is cooked and not getting burnt in the process. Once the eggs are cooked, serve it hot with bread or flat bread.
