This is a different take on the traditional lasagna with a delightful flavor. Asparagus spears, ham, mozzarella cheese and a delicious thyme and garlic flavored white sauces makes this lasagna recipe truly distinct and unique. Lasagna pasta sheets – 5
Margarine – 2 tablespoons
All purpose flour – 2 tablespoons
Garlic cloves, chopped – 2
Milk – 1½ cups
Asparagus, drained – 1 can
Dried thyme – ½ teaspoon
Fully cooked ham, cut into juliennes – 1 cup
Mozzarella cheese, shredded – 1 cup
Fill up a large pot with water and add a little salt. Bring the water to a boil and add the lasagna sheets in it for 8-10 minutes till they are just cooked. Drain the water and cut up the pasta sheet in half crosswise.
Heat a skillet over medium high heat and melt the margarine. Sauté garlic in it till it becomes fragrant. Now add the flour and stir till there are no lumps remaining. Slowly add in the milk and continue to stir. Season with thyme and continue simmering till the sauce becomes thick. Take off heat and keep aside.
Grease a 9 inch baking dish (preferably glass) and place the pasta sheets at the bottom. Add sauce on top of the pasta followed by ham and asparagus. Top with a layer of mozzarella cheese. Make two more layers in the same way, starting with pasta and ending with the shredded cheese.
Cover up the baking pan and cook in your microwave / oven for 10 minutes on high, or till the cheese melts completely and looks bubbly. The cooking time can vary depending on the power setting of your microwave oven. Allow the lasagna to stand for at least 10 minutes before you serve it.
Always use aluminum for to cover the baking dish before using in your oven (not in the microwave). Not only does it ensure that your dish baked evenly but it also making cleanup a lot easier.
