Lip-Smacking Italian Anisette Cookies

Anisette cookies are favorite traditional Italian cake-like cookies flavored with anise and topped with icing sugar and colorful sugar sprinkles. These cookies are a holiday special and are always a part of the Italian cookie trays during special events. Italian Anisette Cookies:

Preparation Time – 30 Minutes

Serves – 20


All purpose flour – 4 cups
Butter – ½ cup
White sugar – 1 cup
Milk – 3/4 cup
Egg – 2
Baking powder – 1 tablespoon
Anise extract – 2 tablespoon
Icing sugar – 2 tablespoons
Sugar sprinkles – ½ cup
Vegetable oil – 1 tablespoon

Method Of Preparation:

Step 1

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Step 2

Beat the soft butter and sugar together in a bowl until fluffy. Add the eggs and whisk the mixture again for 5 minutes. Stir in 1 tablespoon anise extract and mix well.

Step 3

Mix the baking powder and all purpose flour together and add the mixture to the butter mixture prepared. Pour in ¾ of milk taken and combine the ingredients to make sticky dough.

Step 4

Oil your fingers and pinch off 1 inch dough. Roll it into a small ball and place it on a greased cookie sheet. Flatten the top of the ball a bit using your fingers. Do as many cookies as possible with the rest of the dough. You can also make elongated balls to give it an Easter egg shape.

Step 5

Bake the cookies in the oven for 8 to 10 minutes to get soft, cake-like cookies.

Step 6

To prepare the icing, blend icing sugar, the remaining milk and 1 tablespoon anise extract in a bowl. Whisk it well and add food color if you like. Hold the warm cookies in your hand and dip the top side into the icing mixture and place it on a plate. Top the iced cookie with colorful sprinkles and allow them to dry overnight.

Step 7

Arrange the colorful and inviting anise flavored cookies on a serving plate and enjoy it with espresso coffee.
