Recipe For Calamari (Squid Rings) With Marinara Sauce

Calamari is a popular seafood item in restaurants throughout America. It is essentially, batter fried squid rings and is usually served as an appetizer along with marinara sauce. Ready made Marinara sauce is easily available in markets. But preparing marinara sauce at home is quite simple and it is far more flavorsome than the store-bought ones. The good thing about this sauce is that we can prepare it a day in advance and store it in the refrigerator and serve it the next day, along with hot calamari.

Here Is An Easy To Cook, Yummy Recipe, In Restaurant Style:

Marinara Sauce:

Marinara Sauce

Preparation Time: 10 minutes
Cooking Time: 10 minutes


Crushed tomatoes – one can
Garlic – two cloves finely chopped
Chili flakes – half teaspoon
Oregano – half teaspoon
Olive oil – two tablespoons
Butter – one teaspoon
Onion, finely chopped – two tablespoons
Fresh basil leaves with stem – a three inch piece
Pepper powder – half teaspoon
Salt to taste

Step 1

In a blender, add the canned tomatoes, chili flakes, pepper powder and oregano. Blend to a smooth paste.

Step 2

Keep a saucepan on a low flame, add butter and olive oil and wait till the butter melts. Add onions and sauté till they turn almost translucent. Add the chopped garlic and sauté for a minute. Now add half a cup of water to the the ground tomato paste and stir it i into the sautéed ingredients.  Stir continuously till it thickens to a sauce consistency.  Switch off the flame, add basil leaves along with the stem and leave it covered for some time so that the flavor of fresh basil gets infused in the sauce. Cool it, remove the wilted basil and keep the sauce refrigerated in an airtight container.

Calamari Or Fried Squid:

Calamari Or Fried Squid

Preparation Time: 10 Minutes
Cooking Time: 20 Minutes


Squid tubes, cut into rings – 250 grams
All purpose flour – half cup
Corn flour – half cup
Paprika – quarter teaspoon
Pepper powder – half teaspoon
Salt to taste
Vegetable oil for frying

For Garnish:

Parmesan cheese

Step 3

Mix all ingredients except, squid rings and oil, in a small bowl. Put the squid rings in a zip lock pouch and add the flour mixture to it. Shake it well so that the rings get coated well.  Heat oil till it reaches a temperature of 365 degree Fahrenheit.  Fry the squid rings, in batches, till they turn slightly golden. Be careful, not to fry it for more than two minutes, as it has a tendency to become tough and rubbery, if overcooked. Keep it in a plate lined with paper towel for removing excess oil. Transfer it to a serving plate and garnish with grated Parmesan cheese. Serve it along with the previously prepared marinara dip.
